Virtual Presentation: Partnering for Safety and Healing: Supporting Survivors in Behavioral Health Settings
May 21 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm HST
FreeHigh rates of domestic violence are reported among people seeking mental health and substance use services. Experiences of violence, trauma, coercion, and safety concerns can shape mental health symptoms, substance use, help-seeking, and engagement in services. This interactive training provides an overview of the intersections between domestic violence, trauma, mental health, and substance use. Participants will explore how abuse, including coercion related to mental health and substance use, affects safety, well-being, and access to services. The session will highlight trauma-informed practices that recognize survivor strengths, reduce stigma, and support safe, respectful conversations. Participants will also gain an understanding of the role of domestic violence programs and advocates, including resources available through HSCADV and member programs, and explore the value of collaboration between behavioral health providers and domestic violence programs. Through discussion and scenario evaluation, participants will build skills to recognize possible signs of abuse, respond in ways that support safety and autonomy, and connect clients to community-based advocacy services when appropriate.
