Bridging Communication and Care: Supporting Deaf Survivors’ Health Needs through Responsive ASL Interpretation
March 25 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm EST
FreeDeaf survivors face compounded barriers when seeking support for their health needs, from limited access to crisis services to medical interpretation that can miss the nuances of trauma-informed language. American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters play a critical role in Deaf survivors’ healing journey. Yet many do not have trauma-informed and medical setting specific training to effectively interpret. This webinar addresses these gaps by providing practical strategies for ASL interpreters to work more effectively in support of Deaf survivors.
Join the National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence and DeafHope for a webinar on supporting Deaf survivors in the context of medical settings and medical interpretation.
In the first session of this webinar series, we will participate in a collective discussion about the key concepts and terminology interpreters should be prepared for in this setting. We will touch on areas of future skill development including effective work with advocates, navigating common assumptions inherent in interpreting, and considerations for self-care.
In the second session, we will provide an in-depth look at a common medical setting experienced by Deaf survivors. Interpreters will leave with an increased understanding of the exam process and practices for Healing-Centered interpreting.
